TV NEWS AND GOSSIP

You are the fattest link, goodbye

Anne Robinson

She may be known and loved (sort of) for her acid-tongued putdowns of contestants on The Weakest Link, but has Anne Robinson gone too far this time?

At least one TV viewer and bullying charity is up in arms – an activity which is all the rage these days, it seems – after the presenter laid into an overweight woman who was appearing on the show.

The contestant was a chocolate-maker by trade called Susan, who comes from Barnsley, South Yorkshire. During the programme, Anne asked her if she ever sampled her products. After Susan admitted she tried “one or two”, Anne shrieked disbelievingly, “One or two each time?”

And during a conversation about Susan’s attempt to vote off a fellow contestant, Anne asked, “Do you think he was attracted to your body? Maybe he just wants you for your chocolates.”

Mean! "The poor woman looked really embarrassed by Anne's comments,” said viewer Melissa Jacobs. “It was a personal attack for no reason. How humiliating to be verbally attacked on national television."

And Liz Carnell, the spokeswoman for charity Bullying UK said: “The BBC owes this poor woman an apology at the very least. Anne Robinson has been bullying contestants for years and there is no justification for it.”

“We receive endless complaints about bullying on television, particularly on quiz and reality shows.”

Quiz shows? Really? Actually, maybe she’s right – Catchphrase host Roy Walker was always ridiculing that poor Mr Chips …
